Chapter 6 - Vanessa Started to Crack
Vanessa called Daniel that night.
She was crying.
Not apologizing.
Negotiating.
Daniel put the call on speaker after telling her I was present.
"I didn't know about millions," Vanessa said.
I almost laughed.
"You hit my mother."
"Linda said Margaret was ruining everything."
"What does that mean?"
Silence.
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
"Vanessa."
"Your mom told me the paperwork was legal."
Linda had promised Vanessa money.
$75,000.
In exchange, Vanessa was supposed to help persuade Mom to sign.
Persuade.
That was Vanessa's word.
I asked what happened in the kitchen.
Vanessa immediately retreated.
"Margaret insulted me."
"She refused to sign, didn't she?"
No answer.
"Did Linda tell you to hurt her?"
"No!"
Too fast.
"Then why did Linda text you that you weren't supposed to hit her in front of me?"
Vanessa started breathing harder.
"I don't know."
"You do."
She hung up.
But she had already given us something important.
A payment promise.
A reason she was involved.
And confirmation that Linda had recruited her.
Two days later, Mom was discharged to stay with Daniel and me.
We changed our locks.
I installed cameras.
I moved every important document into secure storage.
Then Melissa called.
The notary named on the questionable transfer agreement had responded.
He had never notarized it.
His seal information had been copied.
Now we had more than an ugly family dispute.
We had a document that appeared to contain a false notarization.
Linda still insisted she knew nothing.
Then Vanessa made a mistake.
She sent me a voice message at 2:13 a.m.
She sounded terrified.
"Rachel, your mother-in-law is going to blame everything on me."
I called back.
No answer.
A second message arrived.
This one contained only six words.
Check Margaret's old blue recipe book.
Mom went completely still when I read them aloud.
"I haven't seen that book in months."
"What's inside it?"
She looked at me.

"Your father's trust information."
