Chapter 1 - The Tree in the Rain
By the time Daniel Carter reached the backyard, his one-year-old daughter was tied to a tree in the pouring rain.
For one terrible second, he couldn't move.
Lily's clothes were soaked through.
Her tiny body shook against the trunk.
Claire stood only a few feet away.
And behind the wooden fence, their neighbor Mark still held up his phone, recording everything.
"Stay away from my daughter!" Daniel shouted.
Claire turned.
"Daniel, wait—"
He didn't.
He rushed across the wet grass and struck Claire hard enough to send her stumbling onto the lawn.
Then he dropped beside Lily.
His hands shook as he pulled at the rope.
"Daddy's here. I've got you."
Lily sobbed against him as he freed her and lifted her into his arms.
Daniel wrapped his jacket around her.
Claire pushed herself up from the grass.
"You have no idea what she did!"
Daniel turned.
"She's a baby."
"She gets into everything!"
Lily buried her face against his neck.
Then, in a trembling voice, she whispered something Daniel would never forget.
"She hits me when Daddy goes."
Daniel went still.
Claire's face lost its color.
"That's ridiculous."
Lily suddenly lifted one shaking hand.
She pointed toward the closed door leading into the house.
More specifically—
toward the upstairs wing beyond it.
"Mommy's room," she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
Lily's mother, Emma, had been dead for almost two years.
Her bedroom had remained locked ever since.
Daniel had never been able to clear it out.
Claire knew that.
Everyone knew that.
"What about Mommy's room?" Daniel asked.
Lily looked toward Claire.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
"She's confused."
Lily clung harder to Daniel.
"She hides things there."
The rain seemed to disappear beneath the pounding in Daniel's ears.
He slowly looked at Claire.
"What things?"
Claire's eyes moved toward the house.
Just once.
But Mark saw it.
Daniel saw it too.

And suddenly the woman he'd trusted inside his home looked terrified of one locked bedroom.
