Chapter 5 - The Videos Claire Made

Police seized Claire's phone under warrant two days later.

What investigators found changed everything.

Hundreds of photographs of Lily.

Some looked innocent.

Others were staged.

Lily sitting alone at breakfast.

Lily crying beside the front door.

Lily asleep in a playpen while Daniel was away.

Each image was saved into folders.

D absent.

No parent present.

Emotional distress.

Daniel read the labels in silence.

Then came the videos.

Claire would place her phone on a shelf.

Turn on the camera.

Then ask Lily questions.

"Where's Daddy?"

"Work."

"Does Daddy leave you?"

Lily, barely old enough to understand, would repeat:

"Daddy leave."

"Does Claire take care of you?"

"Claire."

"Who stays with Lily?"

"Claire."

Daniel pushed the laptop away.

"I can't watch this."

Megan paused the video.

"She was manufacturing evidence."

"For court?"

"Most likely."

Rosalie's hands shook.

"Would that even work?"

"Not by itself. But mixed with forged records, travel schedules, misleading photos, and false statements? It could create chaos."

Chaos.

That was the word.

Claire didn't need an immediate victory.

She only needed Daniel under investigation long enough to present herself as Lily's stable caregiver.

Then detectives found emails.

Claire had contacted two family-law attorneys under false names.

She asked hypothetical questions about emergency guardianship.

Temporary control of inherited funds.

Whether a caregiver could seek custody if a widowed father traveled frequently.

One lawyer refused to continue without more information.

The other sent general guidance.

Claire saved every response.

Daniel stared at the dates.

One email was sent the night he told Claire he might propose.

She had kissed him twenty minutes later.

Then there was another discovery.

A deleted email account.

Messages between Claire and a financial consultant named Victor Shaw.

Victor had no obvious connection to Daniel.

But the messages were unmistakable.

Need proof he leaves her regularly.

Need access to original estate docs.

Do not touch trust funds until guardianship is in place.

Daniel read the last line twice.

"Who is Victor Shaw?"

Megan shook her head.

"We're finding out."

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Emma's bedroom suddenly made sense.

Claire had hidden everything there because she knew he never entered.

She had turned his grief into a security system.

That hurt almost as much as the fraud itself.

Then Megan opened one final recovered message.

Sent by Claire the morning of the storm.

The kid saw the box. I need to scare her enough to stop going upstairs.

Daniel's face went white.

The tree.

The rain.

The rope.

It hadn't started because Lily misbehaved.

Lily had discovered Claire's secret.

And Claire had punished her for getting too close.

👉 Lily wasn't tied outside because she had done something wrong—she was punished because she had accidentally found the evidence Claire was terrified Daniel would see.
