Chapter 10 - The Trial Begins
The trial opened with the backyard video.
Daniel hated that.
But the prosecutor explained why.
"The jury must understand what finally exposed the larger scheme."
The room went silent as the footage played.
Rain.
Lily tied to the tree.
Claire standing before her.
Mark's shaking camera.
Daniel rushing through the door.
Then the strike.
Daniel looked down.
The prosecutor didn't hide it.
Neither did Daniel.
When he testified, Claire's lawyer attacked immediately.
"You punched my client."
"Yes."
"You lost control."
"Yes."
"Yet you're asking this jury to believe Claire was the dangerous person?"
Daniel looked toward the jury.
"I'm not asking them to excuse what I did."
The lawyer paused.
Daniel continued.
"I shouldn't have hit her. I accepted the consequences."
"Then why should anyone trust your judgment?"
Daniel took a breath.
"Because when I was wrong, I admitted it."
He looked at Claire.
"She built an entire plan around never admitting anything."
The courtroom went still.
Then Mark testified.
He explained hearing Lily crying.
Looking through the fence.
Seeing the rope.
Recording because he knew Daniel needed proof.
"Why didn't you confront Claire yourself?" the prosecutor asked.
"I didn't want her to stop just long enough to hide what she'd done."
Then came the digital evidence.
The guardianship documents.
The forged email.
Daniel's stolen journal pages.
Victor's spreadsheets.
Emma's estate records.
Claire's messages.
Finally, Victor took the stand.
Claire refused to look at him.
He admitted his role.
He had helped calculate withdrawals.
Suggested how to make Daniel's travel appear neglectful.
Recommended building records slowly.
Then the prosecutor asked:
"Whose idea was it to use the child's fear?"
Victor hesitated.
"Claire's."
"What do you mean?"
"She said Lily was becoming too attached to Daniel whenever he was home."
Rosalie closed her eyes.
"So what did Claire intend to do?"
Victor looked toward the jury.
"Make the child afraid that every time her father left, he might not come back."
Daniel's stomach turned.
The prosecutor played an audio message.
Claire's voice filled the courtroom.
If Lily starts crying when Daniel leaves, that helps me. It shows emotional instability in the home.
A woman on the jury covered her mouth.
Claire stared straight ahead.
Then the prosecutor played the second half.
And once she believes I'm the one who decides whether Daddy comes back, she'll do what she's told.
