Chapter 8 - Emma's Warning
The envelope had been sealed with Emma's initials.
Claire had slit it carefully along the bottom.
Then hidden it inside the lockbox.
Daniel unfolded the letter.
Emma had written it during her final hospitalization.
Her handwriting weakened toward the end.
Daniel,
If I don't come home, please don't make grief into a promise that you'll never love again.
He stopped.
Rosalie covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
I want Lily to grow up around love. But please remember something about her. She wants everyone to be happy with her. She'll stay quiet if she thinks speaking will make someone leave.
Daniel's eyes blurred.
If anyone ever asks you to choose between keeping the peace and believing our daughter, believe Lily.
He put the letter down.
For two years, Claire had possessed those words.
She knew exactly what Emma feared.

Claire had copied that page.

Daniel finally understood the entire sequence.
Claire entered his life.
Learned about Lily's inheritance.
Found Emma's letter.
Realized marriage alone gave her nothing.
Turned herself into Lily's primary caregiver.
Encouraged Daniel to travel.
Manufactured evidence of absence.
Forged guardianship documents.
Copied his grief journal.

Claire tried to terrify her into silence.
The storm wasn't the beginning.
It was the moment the plan broke.
Megan folded Emma's letter carefully.
"This may become evidence."
Daniel nodded.
"Use it."
"Are you sure?"
"I spent two years being afraid to open that room."
He looked toward Lily sleeping against Rosalie.
"I'm done letting grief protect people who hurt her."
Then Megan received an update.
Victor had formally agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
In exchange for consideration at sentencing, he gave them access to a cloud drive.
Inside were audio recordings Claire had sent him.
One was dated three days before the storm.
Claire's voice:
"Once I have guardianship, Daniel can fight all he wants. By the time he realizes what's happening, every official record will show I'm the one raising her."
Victor asked, "What if Lily talks?"
Claire laughed.
"She's one. Who's going to believe her?"
Daniel's face hardened.
Rosalie reached for his hand.
But the recording wasn't over.
Claire added:
"And if Mark next door keeps watching, I'll deal with him too."
