Chapter 2 - The Room Daniel Never Entered

Daniel carried Lily inside.
Mark followed after handing Daniel the video.
Claire came in last.
"You're making a huge mistake," she said.
Daniel ignored her.
He handed Lily to Mark for just a moment while he grabbed a blanket.
Then he called his mother.
"Mom, come over now."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"You don't need to turn this into some family drama."
Daniel stared at her.
"You tied my daughter to a tree."
"I was trying to stop her from running into the street!"
"With her hands tied?"
Claire's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Daniel wrapped Lily in the blanket.
Then Lily pointed toward the staircase.
"Mommy."
Daniel's chest tightened.
Emma's room was upstairs at the end of the hall.
He had kept it untouched after her death.
Her books.
Her clothes.
The photograph from their wedding.
Even her perfume bottle was still on the dresser.
Claire had once offered to clean it out.
Daniel had refused.
Now he carried Lily upstairs.
Claire followed quickly.
"Daniel."
He reached the locked door.
"Where's the key?"
Claire stopped.
"How would I know?"
Daniel looked at her.
For months, the key had been in a small bowl inside his office desk.
He went downstairs.
The bowl was empty.
When he returned, Claire was standing in front of Emma's door.
"Enough."
Daniel stared at her.
"Move."
"You need to calm down."
"Move, Claire."
"It's going to upset Lily."
Lily tightened her arms around Daniel's neck.
"No."
That one small word changed everything.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Move away from the door."
Claire didn't.
Mark, still holding his phone, spoke from behind them.
"Daniel."
He turned.
Mark pointed toward the baseboard beside the door.
There were fresh scratches around the lock.
Someone had been opening it repeatedly.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Her jaw tightened.
"I was cleaning."
"You told me you hadn't been in there."
"I meant recently."
Daniel handed Lily carefully to Mark.
Then he drove his shoulder into the door.
Once.
Twice.
On the third hit, the old frame cracked.
The door swung inward.
Emma's room smelled faintly of cedar and perfume.
At first, everything looked normal.
Then Daniel noticed the bed.
The dust was disturbed.
The closet door stood slightly open.
And beneath Emma's wedding portrait sat a black metal lockbox Daniel had never seen before.
Claire suddenly rushed past him.
"No!"
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Don't touch it."
Her panic was immediate.
"That belongs to me."
Daniel stared.
"In my dead wife's room?"
Claire's breathing changed.

👉 Claire had spent months insisting Emma's room was untouched—but the black lockbox beneath Emma's portrait proved someone had been using the one place Daniel was too heartbroken to enter.
