Chapter 13 - The Backyard Without the Rope

Daniel avoided the backyard for months.
Not consciously.
He simply stopped going there.
Then one Saturday morning, Lily stood at the patio door.
"Outside?"
Daniel froze.
The tree was still there.
Same trunk.
Same fence.
Same patch of grass.
No rain.
No rope.
He crouched.
"Sure."
Lily ran outside.
Daniel followed slowly.
She stopped beneath the tree.
For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
Then Lily reached down.
A small yellow flower had grown near one of the roots.
She pointed.
"Pretty."
Daniel swallowed.
"Yeah."
Mark waved from behind the fence.
Lily waved back.
Rosalie came outside carrying gardening gloves.
"What are we doing?"
Daniel looked at the tree.
"Changing something."
They planted flowers around it.
Not to erase what happened.
That was impossible.
But Daniel didn't want one terrible night to own the entire yard.
Lily dug dirt with a tiny plastic shovel.
Mostly onto her shoes.
Rosalie laughed.
Mark eventually came over with lemonade.
For the first time, Daniel could stand beside the tree without seeing rope.
He saw Lily covered in soil.
Sunlight.
Flowers.
Life after fear.
Later, Daniel removed Emma's bedroom lock.
Rosalie noticed.
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
He didn't clear the room out.
He wasn't ready for that.
Instead, he turned part of it into a memory room for Lily.
Emma's photographs stayed.
Her silver jewelry box.
Her favorite books.
But the black lockbox was gone.
The desk now held crayons.
Lily drew pictures there.
One afternoon she drew four figures.
Daniel.
Rosalie.
Lily.
And someone with yellow hair above them.
"Who's that?"
"Mommy."
Daniel smiled.
"She's flying?"
Lily nodded.
"She can see."
Daniel's eyes filled.
That evening, he opened Emma's letter again.
Believe Lily.
This time it didn't feel like an accusation.
It felt like instruction for the rest of his life.
Daniel placed the letter in a new fireproof safe.
Not hidden.
Protected.
There was a difference.
Then Megan called.
"Claire filed an appeal."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Of course she had.
"Should I worry?"
"Not much. The evidence is overwhelming."
"Will I have to testify again?"
"Probably not."
Daniel looked toward Lily coloring on the floor.
"What happens now?"
"We respond. The courts handle it."
Daniel smiled faintly.
A year earlier, he would have spent the night panicking.
Now he said:
"Okay."

Because Claire no longer controlled the weather inside his house.
👉 Claire could still file papers from prison—but for the first time, Daniel understood that she no longer had the power to make his family live as if danger were standing at the door.
