Chapter 7 - The Journal Claire Stole
Victor gave investigators everything.
Texts.
Spreadsheets.
Audio messages.
And one detail Daniel hadn't expected.
Claire had photographed pages from Daniel's private grief journal.
After Emma died, Daniel's therapist encouraged him to write.
On bad nights, he wrote things he would never say aloud.
I don't know how to do this without her.
Sometimes I want to disappear for one day and let someone else carry everything.
I'm terrified Lily will grow up and realize I wasn't enough.
Claire had copied those pages.
Then sent them to Victor.
Victor suggested taking sentences out of context.
Daniel read their messages.
"Want to disappear" is useful.
Could imply instability.
Need therapist records if possible.
Daniel closed the file.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Finally Rosalie said, "She weaponized your grief."
Daniel stared at the table.
He had trusted Claire with his worst days.
She had hugged him when he cried.
She had told him Emma would want him to move forward.
Then she photographed the pages where he admitted he was struggling.
Megan leaned forward.
"Daniel, those journal entries do not make you unfit."
"I know."
"Do you?"
He looked at her.
"You grieving your wife is not evidence that you don't love your child."
Daniel exhaled.
"I punched Claire."
Megan nodded.
"And that matters."
He looked away.
"I should've controlled myself."
"Yes."
No excuses.
No applause.
Daniel had attacked Claire after seeing Lily tied outside.
Police investigated it separately.
Daniel cooperated completely.
He gave them Mark's unedited video.
He admitted the strike immediately.
He didn't ask Mark to delete anything.
"I want Lily to grow up knowing rules apply to me too," he told Rosalie.
The prosecutor eventually approved a diversion agreement based on the circumstances, Daniel's lack of record, and his cooperation.
Counseling.
Community service.
No pretending the punch hadn't happened.
Daniel accepted every condition.
Claire tried to use it anyway.
Through her attorney, she claimed Daniel's violence proved her concerns about his fitness.
Then Mark handed investigators something else.
His home security system had recorded the backyard for months.
Mostly useless footage.
Rain.
Birds.
Delivery trucks.
But on seven separate days, Claire could be seen taking Lily into the backyard immediately after Daniel's car left.
In four clips, Lily cried while Claire stood over her.
In one, Claire grabbed the child's arm and pulled her toward the house.
In another, Lily ran to the fence when she saw Mark.
The footage contained no dramatic confession.
It didn't need one.
It showed a pattern.
Claire behaved differently when Daniel was gone.
Exactly what Emma's old warning had once told him to watch for.
And then investigators discovered that warning too.
Because inside Emma's estate file was a sealed letter addressed to Daniel.
