Chapter 4 - The Signature That Wasn't His

Daniel studied the guardianship petition until the words blurred.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
His attorney, Megan Brooks, arrived shortly after midnight.
She compared it with documents Daniel had genuinely signed.
"This wasn't done casually."
"What does that mean?"
"Whoever made this practiced."
Daniel looked toward the lockbox.
Inside were photocopies of his checks.
Signed school forms.
Old contracts.
Dozens of samples.
Claire sat downstairs with an officer.
Daniel felt sick.
"She lived in my house."
Megan nodded.
"Which gave her access."
Rosalie sat nearby holding Lily.
"Why would she need guardianship if she already lived here?"
Megan answered carefully.
"Because living with Daniel gives her no legal rights to Lily's money."
Daniel looked up.
"But guardianship would?"
"Potentially access to approved expenses. More importantly, it could position her to request control if she claimed you were unavailable or unfit."
Daniel thought about his work.
Claire had encouraged him to travel more.
"You haven't taken a real break in months," she'd say.
"I can handle Lily."
She had volunteered for daycare pickup.
Doctor visits.
Overnights.
Not because she loved helping.
Because every trip Daniel took could be documented as another absence.
His phone suddenly felt heavy in his hand.
He opened his calendar.
Chicago.
Dallas.
Denver.
Boston.
All trips Claire had pushed him to accept.
Rosalie whispered, "She was creating a pattern."
Megan nodded.
"And possibly evidence."
Daniel remembered something.
"She took pictures constantly."
Claire had photographed Lily eating.
Sleeping.
Crying.
Playing alone.
At the time, Daniel thought she was affectionate.
Now he wondered what the captions said.
Then Mark spoke.
"I've seen her taking photos from outside too."
Daniel turned.
"When?"
"Sometimes she'd put Lily in the yard, then stand back and take pictures."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I thought she was sending them to you."
Daniel's face went cold.
Megan looked at Mark.
"How long?"
"Maybe three months."
Three months.
The same period Claire's lockbox documents covered.
Then Lily woke in Rosalie's arms.
She looked at Daniel.
"Daddy go work."
Daniel crouched beside her.
"Not tonight."
Lily shook her head.
"Claire say Daddy go."
Rosalie and Daniel exchanged a look.
"What else did Claire say?" he asked gently.
Lily's vocabulary was limited, but her answer was clear enough.
"Daddy don't want Lily."
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Claire hadn't only been documenting his absences.
May you like
She had been telling his daughter they meant abandonment.
👉 Claire forged Daniel's signature on paper—but what she'd been quietly teaching Lily to believe about her own father was even more damaging.
