Chapter 11 - Why He Thought She Would Stay
Adam leaned toward Dakota.
“You know what happens if this becomes public.”
“Yes.”
“You lose everything too.”
That sentence carried years of quiet control.
Adam earned most of their household income.
The apartment lease was in his name.
Their investments were managed through accounts he monitored.
Whenever Dakota discussed leaving aviation to start a training company, Adam reminded her that his career provided their security.
He called it partnership.
The recording called it something else.
Melissa had asked why Adam was not worried about Dakota reporting him.
He answered without hesitation.
“She won’t leave. Her mother needs expensive care, and Dakota cannot support her alone.”
Dakota’s mother had suffered a stroke two years earlier.
Adam helped pay for rehabilitation.
Whenever Dakota challenged him, he mentioned those payments.
Not directly.
Just enough to remind her what she risked.
Trinity listened with tears in her eyes as Dakota described the recording.
Adam whispered, “I never threatened your mother.”
“You made her survival part of every argument.”
“I supported your family.”
“You used generosity as a leash.”
Trinity looked down at her belly.
“He did the same thing to me.”
Adam turned.
“What are you talking about?”
“You paid my rent after I became pregnant. Every time I questioned you, you reminded me that I had quit my job.”
“I told you to stop working because the pregnancy was difficult.”
“You told me you would take care of everything.”
Trinity’s voice shook.
“And then you used my identity because you thought I had nowhere else to go.”
For the first time, the two women saw the same pattern clearly.
Adam did not choose vulnerable women accidentally.
He created dependence, then called it love.
Dakota straightened her scarf.
“My mother’s care is already funded.”
Adam blinked.
“What?”
“The investigator helped me contact an attorney. I separated our finances yesterday.”
