Chapter 4 - The Signature She Never Gave
Dakota secured the beverage cart and took her jump seat for departure.
Across the cabin, Adam twisted toward her repeatedly.
She ignored him.
Trinity did not.
“Why is she talking about company records?”
Adam stared straight ahead.
“She’s trying to humiliate me.”
“Did you use the corporate card for this trip?”
“It’s temporary.”
“That is not an answer.”
The plane accelerated down the runway.
Trinity braced one hand over her belly.
Adam reached for her.
She pulled away.
When the aircraft leveled, Dakota released her harness and resumed service.
Adam immediately stood.
A senior flight attendant stepped into the aisle.
“Sir, please return to your seat.”
“I need to speak to my wife.”
Dakota’s eyes never left the coffee tray.
“I am currently working.”
Adam sat only after passengers began watching again.
Dakota served three rows before stopping beside him.
He spoke through clenched teeth.
“You had no right to contact my company.”
“They contacted me.”
His expression shifted.
“What did they say?”
“They asked why my signature appeared on invoices for a consulting company I have never heard of.”
Trinity looked between them.
Adam’s face became rigid.
Dakota continued.
“D.H. Aviation Strategy. Registered to our home address. Paid more than four hundred thousand dollars by your employer.”
“Dakota—”
“I never founded it.”
Trinity’s lips parted.
Adam lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand how procurement works.”
“I understand forgery.”
A passenger nearby slowly removed his headphones.
Dakota placed a glass of water on Adam’s tray.
His hand trembled when he reached for it.
“Where did you get the invoices?”
Dakota’s controlled smile returned.
