Chapter 2 - The Seat Beside His

For several seconds, no one spoke.
The aircraft had not yet left the gate.
Bright Miami sunlight poured through the oval windows while the first-class cabin remained trapped in suffocating silence.
Adam stared at Dakota’s phone.
“What did you record?”
Dakota slipped it beneath her service tablet.
“Please fasten your seat belt, sir.”
“Answer me.”
Her expression remained professional.
“The captain has requested that all passengers remain seated.”
Trinity shoved the champagne glass into Adam’s hand.
Liquid spilled over his fingers and stained the cuff of his white shirt.
“You told me your wife knew about us.”
Adam looked at her sharply.
“Lower your voice.”
“You said you were separated.”
“We are having problems.”
Dakota’s jaw tightened, but she turned toward the beverage cart and adjusted the napkins as though the conversation did not involve her life.
Trinity looked at Dakota.
“Are you two separated?”
Dakota met her eyes.
“No.”
Adam’s face drained of color.
Trinity pressed her designer handbag against her belly.
“He told me you had moved out.”
“I slept beside him last night.”
A passenger across the aisle covered her mouth.
Adam leaned closer to Trinity.
“This is not what it looks like.”
Trinity laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You’re sitting next to your pregnant girlfriend while your wife serves us champagne. What exactly should it look like?”
The cabin door remained open.
Adam glanced toward it.
Dakota noticed.
“You’re free to leave the aircraft,” she said. “But your luggage has already been loaded, and the company representative waiting in Paris has been informed that your itinerary changed.”
Adam went still.
“What company representative?”
Dakota tapped the edge of her tablet.
May you like
“The one attached to the corporate account that purchased both of these seats.”
👉 Adam had paid for the trip with more than his marriage—and Dakota had already alerted the people who owned the money.
