Chapter 11 - GRANT’S TESTIMONY

Grant confessed to pushing me.

He confessed to impersonating Garrett in our home.

He confessed to transporting Caroline and Sophie.

He claimed Garrett ordered every major act.

Records supported many claims.

Not all.

Grant also admitted he occasionally escalated beyond instructions because violence made him feel visible.

The hidden twin had spent his life existing only when the public brother needed a crime committed.

Hurting people became proof he was real.

Understanding that did not reduce the harm.

Grant accepted responsibility without demanding sympathy.

Garrett did the opposite.

He called his brother unstable.

He claimed Vivian controlled them both.

He described himself as another victim.

The prosecutor asked whether victimhood prevented him from becoming an abuser.

He had no answer.

Grant revealed the location of the remaining Vale facilities and identified judges, doctors, and corporate clients.

Federal raids recovered twenty-one women living under false names.

Some had been declared dead.

Others had been stripped of legal identity.

Their cases transformed the trial into a national investigation.

My story was one branch.

The system was the real crime.

Vivian testified against Eleanor.

Eleanor testified against Vivian.

My mother testified against both.

Each woman described herself as the person who finally resisted.

Each had also controlled someone weaker.

The jury received the whole truth, not a clean hero.

Garrett was convicted of conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, unlawful surveillance, and corporate theft.

Grant was convicted of attempted murder, kidnapping, impersonation, and assault, with a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Vivian received multiple life sentences for trafficking, medical coercion, conspiracy, and murder.

Dr. Vale and Judge Andrews were convicted.

Eleanor received a long sentence despite exposing the network.

Justice recognized assistance without erasing victims.

My parents were not criminally charged for the gala plan, but a civil court found they recklessly endangered me.

I supported the finding.

Love did not require legal immunity.

Then Sophie visited.

She stood beside the ICU door holding the dinosaur backpack Grant had packed for her escape.

She stared at my bandages.

“Did Dad do that?”

“Garrett and Grant both helped cause it.”

“Which one is Dad?”

I paused.

“Grant raised you.”

“Is he bad?”

“He did harmful things. He also protected you from some harmful things.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

She entered slowly.

I held out my hand.

She did not take it.

She sat beside the window.

That was enough.

Then her backpack began vibrating.

A phone hidden in the lining lit up.

One message from an unknown sender.

SOPHIE, ASK CHARLOTTE WHAT SHE SENT FROM THE ICU.

I thought I knew.

The evidence package.

The live link.

The recordings.

But the attachment log showed another file sent from my phone.

A file I had never seen.
