Chapter 15 - THE FOURTH SISTER

The fourth sister’s name was Victoria.

My mother had never held her.

Eleanor told her only three babies survived.

In reality, Vivian took Victoria and raised her inside the Andrews family.

She grew up beside Garrett and Grant as their adopted cousin.

Later, she became the woman who managed identity replacements across both families.

Victoria was the person my mother saw behind the chandelier camera.

Not Eleanor.

Victoria lured Eleanor away with Caroline’s bracelet.

Victoria entered the ICU dressed as a nurse.

Victoria altered the medication lines.

Claire designed the send package.

Victoria scheduled the activation.

The sisters had worked together at times and against one another at others.

No one held the entire plan.

That fragmentation protected the system.

Victoria took Lucas after Claire’s arrest.

She believed the survivor foundation belonged to the bloodline and that Lucas would eventually inherit it.

The last hidden family member still thought inheritance meant destiny.

Federal agents traced her to the Maine school’s coastal property.

She contacted me before the raid.

“Come alone, or Lucas disappears again.”

I did not go alone.

I also did not pretend agreement.

I told her exactly who would accompany me: Ortiz, a child advocate, and federal agents remaining outside visual range.

She accepted because she wanted an audience for her argument.

The meeting took place inside an empty school library.

Lucas sat near the window reading.

He looked healthy.

He looked wary.

Victoria stood behind him wearing an ivory suit.

“You destroyed the only structure capable of protecting this family,” she said.

“I removed your ownership.”

“Shared control becomes weak control.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“You still think weakness is the enemy.”

“No. I think unaccountable certainty is.”

Lucas looked up from the book.

“Are you Charlotte?”

“Yes.”

“Victoria says you’re my mother.”

“I may be biologically.”

“Are you taking me?”

“No one is taking you today.”

His shoulders lowered slightly.

Victoria had expected me to claim him dramatically.

I refused the role she wrote.

A child advocate spoke with Lucas separately.

He said Victoria was strict but had not physically harmed him.

He also said she monitored every call, chose his friends, and told him emotions weakened judgment.

Control without bruises remained control.

Federal agents arrested Victoria on identity fraud, kidnapping, medical conspiracy, and obstruction charges.

Lucas entered temporary independent care.

I requested gradual contact.

He chose to call me Charlotte.

That was enough.

Months later, I returned to the ICU room where I had pressed SEND.

The hospital converted it into a patient-rights consultation room.

The vent camera was gone.

The wall had been repaired.

The monitor still made the same steady sound.

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP.

My parents stood near the door.

Caroline sat beside the window.

Claire and Victoria appeared only through court-approved video from separate facilities.

Sophie and Lucas were not present.

Their lives did not need to become symbols for adult closure.

Rebecca Sloan, reinstated under supervision after professional review, brought the original phone.

The evidence case had ended.

The device could finally be returned.

I held it with both hands.

One small screen.

One button.

One moment that looked simple from the outside.

“It’s over,” my mother whispered.

I looked at the phone.

“No.”

Everyone became still.

“One trial ended. One company changed. Several people lost power.”

I placed the phone on the table.

“But what happened to us doesn’t become over because a court file closes.”

Caroline nodded.

My father lowered his eyes.

No one argued.

Then the phone vibrated.

It had no active service.

No battery connection.

Yet the screen lit.

A single unsent draft appeared.

Charlotte,

You believe you pressed SEND to expose Garrett.

The message contained a video attachment dated tomorrow.

I opened the thumbnail.

The same ICU room appeared.

Same window.

Same monitor.

Same bed.

A woman lay beneath the blanket wearing my torn beige gown.

Her face was mine.

But I was standing in the room watching.

The video timestamp showed twenty-four hours in the future.

Beside the bed stood Sophie and Lucas.

Behind them, a man in a dark suit entered.

Garrett.

He was still in federal prison.

In the video, he leaned toward the unconscious woman and whispered:

“Give me the phone.”

Then the heart monitor accelerated.

The future Charlotte opened her eyes.

She looked directly into the hidden camera.

And smiled.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“That file couldn’t exist.”

A final line appeared beneath the attachment.

PHASE THREE BEGINS WHEN CHARLOTTE BELIEVES POWER HAS TRANSFERRED.

The ICU door slowly opened behind us.

A female lawyer entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.

She looked exactly like Rebecca Sloan.

The real Rebecca stood beside me.

The woman raised the bag.

Inside was another phone.

Already unlocked.

Already displaying the blue SEND button.

She looked at me and said softly:

“Charlotte, your first message exposed the Andrews family.”

May you like

Her thumb hovered over the screen.

“This one will expose what you did after the ICU.”
