Chapter 4 - THE SISTER GARRETT MARRIED FIRST

Caroline Pierce was thirty-five.

One year older than me.

Vivian Andrews raised her under another name inside a private boarding school.

She told Caroline that our mother abandoned her.

At twenty-three, Caroline met Garrett.

At twenty-five, she married him secretly.

No public record appeared because Dr. Vale declared her mentally incompetent after the wedding and sealed the marriage through a guardianship court.

Garrett then married me without legally divorcing her.

I was not his first wife.

I was the replacement wife.

Caroline discovered Garrett laundering money through Andrews Development.

When she tried to leave, Vivian placed her inside Vale Recovery.

Garrett told everyone she died from an overdose.

Years later, he married me because my family trust held land required for the company’s largest development project.

The marriage was not romance.

It was acquisition.

Caroline had escaped Vale Recovery two days before the gala.

Vivian captured her again and used the hospital bracelet to lure Eleanor away from the balcony.

Caroline believed she was currently inside another facility but did not know which one.

She had stolen a staff phone long enough to call.

The line disconnected before Hayes could trace it.

My mother wanted immediate raids.

Rebecca insisted on warrants built from evidence rather than panic.

The distinction mattered.

Every person in my life had justified control by claiming urgency.

We would not repeat it.

Garrett was formally arrested for assault and attempted murder after the chandelier footage was authenticated.

His attorney argued the push followed a marital argument and lacked intent.

Then Rebecca opened the memory card from the safe.

It contained audio recorded in Garrett’s office.

Vivian’s voice said, “Charlotte must survive long enough to sign.”

Garrett replied, “And after?”

“Accidents are useful only when they happen in the right order.”

The planned order was clear.

First the gala fall.

Then the incompetency petition.

Then transfer of my shares.

Then death during hospital recovery.

Garrett’s second attack in the ICU was meant to take the phone before I exposed the records.

If the officers had not been present, he might have completed the final stage.

My parents had contacted police before he entered.

For once, their plan included immediate protection.

Too late to erase the balcony.

Enough to stop the hospital room.

Hayes traced Caroline’s call to Saint Catherine’s Behavioral Center, a Vale facility two hours away.

Federal agents entered.

Caroline’s room was empty.

A nurse said Vivian moved her under a court order signed by Judge Malcolm Andrews.

Garrett’s uncle.

The financial, medical, and legal arms of the family protected each other.

The nurse secretly saved security footage.

It showed Caroline being pushed through a rear exit.

Beside Vivian stood a man wearing Garrett’s suit and face.

Garrett was in police custody.

The man could not be him.

Vivian had twin sons.

Garrett and Grant Andrews.

One became the public husband.

The other became the hidden enforcer.

Caroline had not been married only to the wrong family.

She might not know which brother had actually married her.

Neither did I.
