Chapter 9 - THE CHILD I DIDN’T KNOW I HAD

The file showed a pregnancy six years earlier.

I remembered a surgery after collapsing during a family vacation.

Garrett said an ovarian cyst ruptured.

Medical scans now showed evidence of childbirth.

A girl had been delivered.

My daughter.

I had carried her while drugged and isolated inside a Vale clinic.

Garrett and Vivian took the child.

Her name was Sophie Andrews.

Age six.

Current guardian: Grant Andrews.

Grant had not escaped alone.

He had taken my daughter.

My parents knew nothing.

Caroline knew Sophie existed but believed I had surrendered her.

Vivian had shown her forged consent forms.

The signatures looked real because Grant guided my sedated hand.

A real signature without free choice.

The same method repeated across every file.

My body remembered what my mind had been denied.

The grief arrived without memories.

That made it harder to hold.

I had no first kick.

No birth cry.

No empty nursery.

Only a photograph of a child with my eyes.

Ortiz traced Grant through school records.

Sophie attended a private academy under another surname.

She was withdrawn the morning after the gala.

A teacher secretly saved her latest drawing.

It showed two men with the same face standing on opposite sides of a house.

One labeled DAD.

The other labeled BAD DAD.

Sophie knew about the twins.

She had learned to distinguish them by the way Garrett favored his left knee.

Grant had told her Garrett was dangerous.

He never told her both men helped steal her.

A message arrived from Grant.

He offered Sophie in exchange for the master server.

Not custody.

Not safety.

A trade.

The man raised as a hidden instrument had learned to treat people as leverage.

I refused to exchange the archive.

He sent a live video of Sophie seated inside a car.

She did not appear restrained.

Grant asked her who I was.

She looked at my ICU image on his tablet.

“The sleeping mother.”

My throat closed.

Vivian had shown her photographs of me unconscious, teaching her that I was too sick to raise her.

Grant said he rescued Sophie from that lie.

Then he told her another.

That I chose Garrett over her.

I spoke directly into the camera.

“Sophie, I didn’t know where you were.”

Grant muted me.

The control was immediate.

Ortiz traced traffic sounds and a church bell in the video.

Caroline recognized the location.

Saint Anne’s Chapel beside the first Vale maternity home.

Federal agents surrounded it.

Grant had prepared three exits.

Sophie used a fourth.

She crawled through an old confession passage and reached the cemetery outside.

A patrol officer found her before Grant did.

He escaped.

Sophie entered protected care.

I did not demand she come to the ICU.

I sent one message.

My name is Charlotte. I am not asleep anymore.

She replied through her child advocate.

Did you wake up because I was missing?

I answered truthfully.

I woke up because people finally stopped controlling what I knew.

Her second message came hours later.

May you like

Can I see you without Garrett?

That became our first choice together.
