Chapter 10 - Owen’s Final Message

Owen’s voice sounded tired.
But clear.
“If anything happens to me, Maris started giving Lumi medication without medical approval.”
Gideon closed his eyes.
Owen continued.
“She tells Lumi the medicine is candy. It makes her sleep when Maris wants to leave the house.”
The second file contained an argument.
Owen accused Maris of stealing from a children’s charity where she served as treasurer.
He had discovered transfers into a private account.
Maris threatened him.
“You expose me, and I’ll make sure no judge gives you Lumi.”
The final recording was made minutes before the fire.
Owen whispered:
“She found the divorce filing. She says no one takes her daughter. I’m putting the financial records and custody evidence on the old phone. Lumi’s toy rabbit has the card.”
A crash sounded in the background.
Then Maris shouted:
“Open the door!”
Owen continued quickly.
“If I don’t make it out, the original bank ledger is inside Lumi’s red storybook.”
The file ended with the smoke alarm.
Every person in the room looked toward the lower shelf.
The children’s books.
The medicine bottle.
Maris surged to her feet.
The younger officer held her down.
“No!”
The older officer moved the bottle aside and pulled out a red picture book.
The cover had been glued shut near the spine.
Inside was a thin plastic sleeve containing bank documents.
No one read them in front of Lumi.
But Maris’s reaction confirmed what they were.
She began shouting.
“You have no right!”
The officers secured the documents.
A detective arrived with a child-protection specialist.
Lumi did not want to release Gideon.
He stayed beside her while they photographed the bruises.
When asked how she got them, she whispered:
“Mom held me until I promised not to tell.”
“How often?”
Lumi looked toward the medicine bottle.
“When she wanted me to sleep.”
Maris’s anger collapsed.
Not into remorse.
Into fear.
The secret was no longer one recording.

It was a chain of evidence connecting the medicine, Owen’s fire, financial theft, and years of threats.
👉 Maris had lost control of the evidence, but she still held one legal weapon: Gideon had never formally adopted Lumi.
