Chapter 3 - The Rules Lumi Never Spoke About

Lumi lived by invisible rules.

She never asked for seconds unless Maris offered.

She never closed her bedroom door.

She never touched the lower shelf in the playroom.

She apologized before anyone accused her of anything.

And every time she broke a glass, dropped a toy, or spilled water, she whispered the same sentence.

“Please don’t make me go quiet.”

Gideon heard it for the first time on a Sunday morning.

Lumi knocked over a cup of juice.

She froze.

Her eyes widened.

Then she backed toward the wall.

“I’m sorry. Please don’t make me go quiet.”

Gideon put down the towel.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

“Who makes you go quiet?”

“No one.”

Her answer came too quickly.

Maris entered the kitchen.

“What happened?”

“I spilled it,” Lumi said.

Maris smiled at Gideon.

“She’s clumsy.”

Then she crouched beside her daughter and placed one hand on Lumi’s shoulder.

It looked gentle.

But Lumi’s entire body stiffened.

“Go change,” Maris said.

Lumi hurried away.

Gideon watched her.

“You grabbed her hard.”

“I touched her shoulder.”

“She looked afraid.”

“She respects me.”

“No. She feared you.”

Maris’s eyes cooled.

“Be careful, Gideon.”

“About what?”

“Trying to turn my daughter against me.”

He stared at her.

“That is not what I’m doing.”

“You work in an emergency room. You think every bruise is abuse and every sad child needs rescuing.”

“I did not say abuse.”

“You were thinking it.”

That night, Gideon checked on Lumi while Maris showered.

The little girl was awake.

She lay beneath the blanket with both hands over her ears.

“Does something hurt?” he whispered.

Lumi shook her head.

He noticed a faint bruise near her elbow.

“What happened there?”

She pulled the blanket higher.

“I fell.”

“Where?”

“The stairs.”

There were no stairs near where she pointed.

Gideon did not challenge her.

Instead, he sat beside the bed.

“You never have to protect a grown-up from the truth.”

Lumi looked at him for one long second.

Then the bathroom water stopped.

Her face changed.

“Please go.”

The fear in her voice was immediate.

Gideon left before Maris came out.

But as he closed the door, he heard Lumi whisper into the darkness:

“She said the fire happens to people who tell.”

👉 The word “fire” connected Lumi’s fear to her father’s death—and Gideon began to wonder whether Maris had lied about more than bruises.
