Chapter 7 - What Really Happened to Lumi’s Father

Maris always said the fire was an accident.

Lumi’s father, Owen Hale, had fallen asleep after drinking.

A space heater ignited the curtains.

Maris escaped through the back door.

Owen did not.

The official report supported electrical failure.

But Gideon requested a copy through Dana.

One detail stood out.

The heater had been found unplugged.

Another bothered him more.

A neighbor reported hearing Owen and Maris arguing ten minutes before the fire.

Maris denied it.

She claimed Owen was alone.

Gideon contacted the retired fire investigator listed on the report.

Thomas Bell remembered the case.

“I never liked it,” he said.

“Why was it ruled accidental?”

“Not enough evidence for anything else.”

“Was the heater responsible?”

“Maybe. But someone moved it.”

“Who?”

“Could not prove that.”

Thomas said Maris had been unusually calm.

She answered every question perfectly.

Too perfectly.

Then Lumi, four years old, told a firefighter:

“Mommy made the smoke because Daddy was leaving.”

The statement was dismissed as trauma.

Maris later said Lumi had confused a candle with the fire.

“Was there a candle?” Gideon asked.

“No.”

Gideon felt cold.

“What did Owen do for work?”

“He was an insurance investigator.”

That mattered.

Owen understood evidence.

He understood fraud.

He may have been collecting proof against Maris before his death.

Gideon searched public court records.

Owen had filed for divorce two days before the fire.

He requested emergency custody of Lumi.

The filing contained a sealed statement.

Dana helped Gideon petition for access through child-protection channels.

The statement was short.

Owen accused Maris of medicating Lumi to keep her quiet.

He also claimed Maris had threatened to burn the house before allowing him to take their daughter.

Gideon sat alone in his car after reading it.

Maris had not begun controlling Lumi after Owen died.

Owen had died while trying to stop it.

Gideon called Dana.

“We need police now.”

“Do you know where Lumi is?”

“At school.”

“And Maris?”

“At home.”

“Do not confront her. Pick Lumi up with an officer present.”

Before Gideon could answer, his phone rang.

Maris.

He let it ring once.

Then answered.

Her voice was calm.

“Why did Lumi’s school call me and say you’re coming early?”

Gideon’s blood turned cold.

👉 Maris realized Gideon was moving to protect Lumi—and she reached the school before he did.
