Chapter 14 - The Adoption Paper
One year after Maris’s conviction, Gideon filed to adopt Lumi.
He did not surprise her with it.
He placed the papers on the kitchen table and explained every page.
“You can say no.”
Lumi frowned.
“Why would I?”
“Because this belongs to you.”
“What changes if I sign?”
“I become your legal father.”
“You already come to school meetings.”
“Yes.”
“You already stay when I have nightmares.”
“Yes.”
“You already know I hate peas.”
“Very important legal information.”
She smiled.
It was easier now.
Not effortless.
Some nights she woke smelling smoke that was not there.
Some days a raised voice made her freeze.
But she had learned to say:
“I’m scared.”
And Gideon always answered:
“I’m here.”
The adoption judge asked whether Lumi wanted to change her last name.
She shook her head.
“I want to keep Hale.”
Gideon smiled.
“So do I.”
The judge looked surprised.
Lumi explained:
“Hale was my first dad’s name. Gideon says love adds people. It doesn’t erase them.”
The judge approved the adoption.
Gideon became Gideon Hale-Calder legally, joining Lumi’s name to his own.
After court, they visited Owen’s grave.
Lumi placed the repaired stuffed rabbit beside the stone.
She kept the memory card.
Not as evidence anymore.
As proof that Owen had tried to protect her until the end.
“Dad,” she whispered, “Gideon believed us.”
Gideon stood several steps away, giving her privacy.
Lumi turned.
“You can come closer.”
He joined her.
She took his hand with one of hers and touched Owen’s name with the other.
For the first time, the two fathers did not feel like opposite sides of her life.
One had left her truth.
