Chapter 13 - The Detective Who Closed the Case

The voice belonged to Eric Vance.

The original detective assigned to Owen’s fire.

He retired six months after closing the case.

Bank records showed Maris transferred $40,000 to a company owned by his brother.

Eric claimed it was payment for consulting work.

The company had never operated.

Prosecutors searched his home.

They found copies of Owen’s sealed custody statement, crime-scene photographs, and a missing evidence bag containing the accelerant sample.

Eric had buried the arson evidence.

In exchange, Maris paid him from the stolen charity funds.

His false report turned Owen’s death into an accident.

It also helped Maris convince Lumi that no one would believe her.

Eric was arrested.

When Maris learned he had confessed, she finally asked for a plea deal.

The prosecutor refused to dismiss the murder charge.

At trial, the recordings played in chronological order.

Owen’s warning.

Tuesday’s confession.

Maris’s private phone call.

The jury saw photographs of Lumi’s bruises.

They heard medical testimony about the hidden sedative.

They heard Gideon explain why the marks on Lumi’s arm could not have come from a normal fall.

Maris’s attorney tried to portray Lumi as confused.

The child testified through a protected video link.

“Did your mother tell you what to say?” the attorney asked.

“Yes.”

The attorney leaned forward.

“What did she tell you?”

“To say she never hurt me.”

The jury went silent.

“And was that true?”

Lumi looked directly into the camera.

“No.”

Maris closed her eyes.

The trial lasted twelve days.

The jury deliberated for five hours.

Guilty on every major count.

Maris was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for decades.

Eric Vance received eighteen years.

The stolen charity money was recovered from hidden accounts and returned.

But after the verdict, Lumi asked Gideon a question he had not expected.

“Does this mean she stops being my mom?”

Gideon took her hand.

“No court can erase where you came from.”

“Then what changes?”

“She cannot hurt you anymore.”

Lumi thought about that.

Then she asked:

“Can you be my dad without replacing him?”

Gideon’s eyes filled.

“That is the only way I would want to be.”

👉 The criminal case was over, but Gideon still had to prove that love could feel safe without asking Lumi to forget Owen.
