Chapter 8 - The Empty Classroom
Gideon arrived at Lumi’s school with Dana and a patrol officer.
Her classroom was empty.
The teacher looked confused.
“Her mother signed her out twenty minutes ago.”
Gideon’s vision blurred.
“Did Lumi want to leave?”
“She looked upset.”
“Did she say anything?”
The teacher hesitated.
“She asked me to call you.”
Gideon called Maris.
No answer.
He opened the home security application.
The front-door camera showed Maris leading Lumi inside.
Lumi’s backpack hung from one shoulder.
The old phone was still inside it.
Gideon called 911.
Then he saw something else.
Maris looked directly into the camera before entering.
She knew he was watching.
A text arrived.
COME HOME ALONE.
Dana read it.
“She wants control.”
“I’m going.”
“With officers.”
“She said alone.”
“And she knows you are a nurse, not a hostage negotiator.”
Two patrol cars followed Gideon to the house without sirens.
Dana remained outside.
The officers entered through the front door after Gideon unlocked it.
The playroom was silent.
Blocks covered the floor.
Toy boxes stood open.
Lumi’s backpack lay beside the sofa.
Maris stood near the lower shelf.
Lumi sat on the floor.
Her face was wet.
Her pupils looked heavy.
Gideon dropped beside her.
“Did she give you medicine?”
Lumi whispered, “I spit it out.”
Maris smiled tightly.
“She had a panic attack.”
The officer looked at the bottle behind the books.
“Step away from the child.”
Maris did not move.
Gideon pulled Lumi against his chest.
That was when her sleeve rose and exposed the bruises.
The officer’s expression changed.
Maris saw it.
Then she lunged.
“Give her to me!”
The confrontation unfolded exactly as the hidden phone continued recording inside Lumi’s backpack.
