Chapter 10 - THE NAME DANIEL RECOGNIZED
The payment list contained initials.
Dates.
Amounts.
Most appeared to identify Braddock, Vance, and civilian transport contacts.
One entry was different.
D.M.
Daniel Monroe stared at it.
The amount beside the initials was enormous.
The base commander looked uncomfortable.
“Sir, someone may be trying to connect this to you.”
Daniel did not react defensively.
“Preserve the document.”
Avery heard the conversation.
“Dad?”
“This investigation cannot remain under my direct influence.”
The general immediately requested an outside investigative command.
He surrendered control of the evidence and removed himself from all decisions involving suspects.
Braddock saw an opportunity.
He smiled for the first time since the helicopter landed.
“Maybe the great general isn’t here for his daughter. Maybe he’s protecting himself.”
Avery looked at her father.
Daniel did not respond to the insult.
He simply handed his secure credentials to the arriving investigative officer.
“I will cooperate fully.”
That decision changed the atmosphere.
Power did not protect Daniel from scrutiny.
He demanded the same standard for himself that he demanded for Braddock.
A handwriting specialist examined the payment list.
The initials had been added later with different ink.
Someone wanted investigators to suspect Daniel.
A digital search of Vance’s computer revealed a draft message:
If the inspection gets too close, connect the transfers to Monroe.
The scheme depended on Daniel appearing corrupt.
Ava’s secret identity created an unexpected complication.
