Chapter 15 - THE MOTOR-POOL ESCAPE
Braddock was moved under guard to a temporary holding office while investigators processed the expanding case.
A clerical error left one interior corridor unsecured for less than two minutes.
Braddock used the opportunity.
He shoved past a guard and ran toward the motor pool.
He did not intend to leave through the main gate.
He knew an old maintenance road crossing the training field.
Jonah saw him through the dining-hall window.
He alerted military police and followed at a distance.
Braddock reached a utility vehicle with keys hidden beneath the seat.
Jonah stepped into the roadway.
“Don’t.”
Braddock started the engine.
“You always wanted to be her hero.”
“This isn’t about Ava.”
“It’s always about her now.”
Braddock accelerated.
Jonah jumped aside as the vehicle passed.
Military police vehicles entered from the opposite direction.
Braddock turned sharply onto wet grass.
The utility vehicle lost traction and struck a low barrier.
He climbed out and ran.
Jonah followed only far enough to keep visual contact.
He did not tackle him.
Did not fire a weapon.
Did not risk becoming part of Braddock’s violence.
Military police surrounded Braddock near the parade field.
He finally stopped.
From the dining-hall entrance, Ava watched through the rain.
Daniel stood behind her.
Braddock looked toward them as officers closed in.
His face held no arrogance now.
Only panic.
Ava did not feel victorious.
She felt tired.
