Chapter 11 - AVA’S REAL INJURY
Ava’s leg injury occurred six weeks earlier during a convoy exercise.
The official report blamed wet pavement.
A transport vehicle lost control.
Ava pushed another soldier away and became trapped between the vehicle and a barrier.
Her lower leg was crushed.
Doctors saved it, but she required surgery, a brace, and months in a wheelchair.
The investigation reopened the accident report.
Vehicle data revealed the brakes had failed.
Maintenance records showed the system was inspected the day before.
The technician’s signature was valid.
But the replacement brake component listed in the report had never been installed.
The part had been removed from supply inventory by Captain Vance.
Jonah realized what that meant.
“The accident was caused by the stolen equipment scheme.”
The investigators could not yet prove anyone intended to injure Ava.
The brake component may have been sold for money.
But after Ava discovered the inventory irregularities, Braddock began targeting her.
Her injury was both evidence and vulnerability.
Ava stared at the wheelchair.
For weeks, she blamed herself for not reacting quickly enough.
Now she understood the vehicle may never have been safe.
Daniel stood beside her.
“You saved another soldier.”
“I couldn’t save myself.”
“You survived.”
Ava’s eyes filled.
The disciplined mask finally cracked.
“I worked my whole life so nobody could say I was protected by you.”
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“You are not protected because you are my daughter.”
He looked toward Jonah and the soldiers who had spoken.
“You are protected because you are a soldier. You should have been safe here.”
Ava lowered her head.
Her father placed one hand gently on the wheelchair armrest.
Not on her shoulder.
Not on her medals.
He allowed her to choose the distance.
