Chapter 5 - THE RECORD ON AVA’S PHONE
A military police officer asked Ava to describe the attack.
She gave a precise account.
No dramatic language.
No exaggeration.
Braddock activated the extinguisher without warning.
The stream struck her face.
Her wheelchair moved backward.
Jonah prevented a collision.
Braddock then swung the canister into Jonah’s tray.
The officer asked whether there had been earlier incidents.
Ava paused.
Daniel noticed.
“Ava.”
She looked at him.
“This is not the first time.”
The general’s jaw tightened.
She unlocked her phone.
Inside was a folder containing photographs, dates, medical reports, and voice recordings.
Braddock ordering her to stand against medical restrictions.
Braddock removing the accessible ramp from a training area.
Braddock telling soldiers not to help her.
Braddock calling her “dead weight.”
One recording was particularly clear.
“If you can’t walk, you don’t belong in my Army.”
The dining hall became silent.
Daniel listened without moving.
Ava watched his face.
“I was waiting until I had enough evidence.”
“You had enough after the first incident.”
“I didn’t want anyone saying my father solved it.”
Daniel absorbed the words.
She had endured humiliation partly because of him.
Because she feared his rank would make every achievement look borrowed.
Jonah looked at the floor.
He had urged Ava to report Braddock weeks earlier.
