Chapter 14 - THE SOLDIERS WHO DISAPPEARED
Three injured soldiers had transferred out of Braddock’s unit during the previous year.
All left with poor evaluations.
All had worked late warehouse assignments.
All reported equipment discrepancies before their transfers.
One soldier, Private Lucas Dean, had attempted to file a complaint.
The complaint vanished.
His evaluation suddenly described him as unstable.
He received an administrative discharge months later.
Investigators contacted him.
Lucas still had copies of emails, photographs, and a voice recording.
Braddock threatened him directly.
“You report this, and no unit will ever trust you again.”
Lucas had believed him.
He left the Army ashamed.
When he learned Ava’s report reopened the investigation, he agreed to testify.
The unit listened to his recorded statement inside a briefing room.
Ava sat in her wheelchair near the front.
Lucas appeared on a screen.
“I thought I failed.”
His voice shook.
“I didn’t understand they needed me gone.”
Ava looked at the floor.
She had nearly suffered the same outcome.
Daniel watched from the rear of the room under the supervision of the independent investigators.
He understood the case was no longer about his daughter.
Braddock and Vance used military authority to exploit injured personnel.
They selected soldiers whose credibility was already vulnerable.
Pain medication.
Medical restrictions.
Emotional stress.
If those soldiers complained, Braddock called them unstable.
Ava survived the strategy because she documented everything.
And because Jonah caught her wheelchair before it crashed.
After the statement, Ava contacted Lucas privately.
“You didn’t fail.”
“Feels like I did.”
“They built the system to make you feel that way.”
