Chapter 8 - THE SOLDIERS WHO FINALLY SPOKE

Once Braddock lost control of the room, witnesses began stepping forward.
A young private described being forced to train with a fractured wrist.
Another soldier said Braddock threatened to destroy his career after he reported unsafe equipment.
A medic admitted Braddock pressured her to alter a treatment note.
A wheelchair mechanic explained that someone loosened one of Ava’s brakes three days earlier.
Daniel’s head snapped toward him.
“Loosened?”
The mechanic nodded.
“If Private Monroe had used the steep exterior ramp, the chair might not have stopped.”
Ava looked stunned.
She had assumed the brake failure was accidental.
Jonah had repaired it before she used the ramp.
Military police added the incident to the report.
Braddock denied everything.
“They’re all lying because they hate discipline.”
Jonah finally lost his restraint.
“Discipline is not making injured soldiers beg for help.”
Braddock stepped toward him.
Military police moved between them.
Ava raised her hand again.
“Jonah.”
He stopped.
She had prevented him from striking Braddock twice.
Not because Braddock deserved protection.
Because Jonah’s future mattered more than one moment of anger.
Daniel saw the exchange.
His daughter’s uniform was muddy.
Her face was white with powder.
Her leg was strapped into a brace.
Yet she was still protecting another soldier’s career.
The general’s paternal rage deepened into pride.
Then one of the witnesses offered a new detail.

Braddock had been using injured soldiers for late-night warehouse duties because they attracted less attention.
👉 Ava’s injury had not made her useless to Braddock—it had made her the perfect cover for his smuggling route.
