Chapter 4 - WHY THE GENERAL CAME
General Monroe did not fly to Fort Hartwell because someone called and said Ava had been attacked.
The Black Hawk was already in the air.
Daniel had been traveling to the base for an unannounced inspection.
Several shipments of restricted military equipment had vanished during transfers through Fort Hartwell.
The losses appeared small individually.
Communications components.
Optical devices.
Vehicle-tracking units.
But together they could create a serious security risk.
A confidential investigation had narrowed attention to one logistics chain.
Braddock supervised personnel connected to that chain.
Daniel did not know Ava had started asking questions about missing equipment.
He also did not know Braddock had been targeting her.
Ava never mentioned it.
She wanted to handle the situation through proper channels.
When the helicopter landed, Daniel intended to meet the base commander privately.
Then he entered the dining facility and saw his daughter covered in extinguisher powder.
For one second, he was not a general.
He was a father looking at his injured child.
But years of command discipline stopped him from crossing the room in rage.
He did not touch Braddock.
He did not shout.
He looked toward the military police.
“Secure the room.”
The officers moved immediately.
Nobody was permitted to leave.
Braddock attempted to explain.
“Sir, this was a training joke.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“Was she participating?”
Braddock hesitated.
“No, sir, but—”
“Then it was not training.”
Ava wiped more powder from her face.
“Dad, don’t interfere.”
Every soldier heard her.
Whispers moved through the room.
Braddock’s mouth opened.
He finally understood the relationship.
Daniel looked at Ava.
“I will not interfere with the investigation.”
Then his eyes returned to Braddock.
