Chapter 12 - BRADDOCK’S OFFER
Braddock requested an attorney.
Then he offered investigators a deal.
He would identify the civilian buyers and reveal the shipment location.
In return, he wanted protection from the most serious charges.
He insisted Captain Vance controlled the operation.
“I only followed orders.”
The soldiers who knew him were not surprised.
Braddock built his reputation on power.
The moment power disappeared, loyalty disappeared with it.
He claimed the remaining equipment was hidden inside a maintenance trailer near the western training field.
Military police searched it.
The trailer was empty.
Braddock had lied.
During the search, an unauthorized civilian truck approached another gate.
Its paperwork appeared legitimate.
A guard noticed the driver’s route did not match the shipping order.
The truck attempted to reverse.
Base security stopped it.
Inside were medical supply crates.
Beneath the top layer were restricted military devices.
The false documents bore Captain Vance’s authorization.
A phone recovered from the driver contained messages from Braddock.
One read:
The girl found the serial number. I’ll handle her.
The investigator placed the message before him.
Braddock stopped talking.
Ava was asked whether she wanted to leave before the questioning continued.
She refused.
“I want to hear what he says.”
Braddock looked at her through the glass partition.
“You ruined your own unit.”
Ava held his gaze.
“No. I stopped you from selling it.”
He leaned forward.
“You think they’ll remember you as a hero? They’ll remember the general’s daughter who needed a helicopter.”
The words struck exactly where he intended.
Ava’s face tightened.
Then Jonah stepped beside her.
“We’ll remember the soldier who documented what the rest of us were afraid to report.”
