Chapter 1 - The Boy Who Admitted Everything

Max Sterling looked me straight in the eyes, smiled, and said, “Yes,” after I asked if he had hurt my daughter.
The room went silent.
I had just slammed the hospital discharge papers onto Principal Harris’s desk, my hands shaking from everything I had held inside for three days. My daughter Lily’s bruised face was still burned into my memory. The doctor’s notes were right there in front of everyone, describing injuries that should never have happened inside a school.
Richard Sterling leaned back in his chair, expensive gray suit perfectly pressed, wearing the same arrogant smile he had worn since I walked through the door.
“Like mother, like daughter,” he said coldly. “Both failures.”
Principal Harris looked uncomfortable, but Richard’s confidence filled the room. Everyone knew his family donated money to the school. Everyone knew his name was on buildings, programs, and events.
But I was not there to fight his money.
I was there for my daughter.
I stepped toward Max, the twelve-year-old boy sitting casually in his navy hoodie.
“Did you push my daughter?” I asked.
Before anyone could react, Max stood and shoved me backward.
My shoulder hit the filing cabinet with a sharp metallic sound.
A teacher gasped.
Richard laughed.
Max crossed his arms.
“My dad pays for this school,” he said. “I make the rules.”
Pain shot through my back, but I forced myself upright.
I looked at the boy who had hurt my child.
Then I asked again.
“Did you hurt her?”
Max didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.”
Richard’s smile remained for half a second.
Then I pulled out my phone.
I pressed one button.
“We got the evidence.”
Richard laughed louder.
“You think a recording changes anything?”
But then his eyes dropped toward my phone screen.
His smile slowly disappeared.
