Three years earlier, I thought Richard Sterling was simply a successful businessman who cared about his son.
I was wrong.
Richard and I had once worked in the same company. I knew his reputation. Brilliant, charming, and impossible to challenge.
He built his empire by making people believe he was always the smartest person in the room.
After my divorce, I focused only on Lily.
She was quiet, kind, and always tried to see the good in people.
That was why Max targeted her.
She never fought back.
She never wanted trouble.
And Richard knew that.
Outside the principal’s office, Richard followed me.
“You have no idea who you’re fighting,” he whispered.
“I know exactly who I’m fighting.”
“No,” he said. “You think this is about two kids.”
His eyes hardened.
“This is about power.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it confirmed something.
Max’s actions were not random.
Someone had taught him.
Later that night, I reviewed the video again.
There was something I missed.
Before Max pushed Lily, he looked at someone behind the camera.
Someone off-screen.
Someone giving him confidence.
I froze the frame.
The reflection in the glass showed a familiar gray suit.
