Chapter 5 - The Price Of Silence

Richard’s influence spread quickly.

By afternoon, rumors followed me everywhere.

Parents whispered that I was unstable.

Teachers avoided conversations.

Even people who believed me became afraid.

Richard didn’t need everyone to hate me.

He only needed them to doubt me.

Then he made his offer.

He met me in the school parking lot.

“Withdraw the complaint,” he said.

I laughed.

“You hurt my daughter and think money fixes it?”

“No,” he replied. “Money prevents problems.”

I stepped closer.

“You’re scared.”

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then he smiled.

“You have no idea what you’re about to lose.”

That night, Lily finally told me something she had been hiding.

She said Max wasn’t alone.

There were other kids.

Other incidents.

But everyone stayed quiet because Richard’s donations protected him.

Then Lily handed me a small notebook.

She had been writing everything down.

Names.

Dates.

Places.

And one sentence that made my stomach drop.

“Max said his dad taught him how to make people disappear.”
