Chapter 2 - The First Lie Falls Apart

Richard immediately changed his expression.

The businessman who had walked into the office believing he owned the room suddenly looked careful.

“Principal Harris,” he said, adjusting his sleeve, “I think we’re dealing with an emotional mother making accusations.”

I watched him carefully.

That was his first move.

Not denying what Max said.

Changing the subject.

Principal Harris asked me to explain the recording, but I refused to hand over my phone immediately.

“I want every person in this room to hear it together,” I said.

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Max looked less confident.

The recording was not from the office.

It was from the hallway outside Lily’s classroom.

A student had sent it to me anonymously that morning.

The video showed Max cornering Lily near the lockers.

But the most important part came after.

Max’s voice.

“She won’t tell anyone. My dad said nobody can touch us.”

Richard immediately stood.

“That could be edited.”

I looked at him.

“You knew about this.”

For the first time, his arrogance slipped.

Only for a second.

Then he smiled again.

“You’re desperate, Elena.”

I hated that he was right about one thing.

I was desperate.

But desperation was not weakness when someone had hurt my child.

Principal Harris took the phone.

His face changed as he watched.

Then his eyes moved toward Max.

“Is this your voice?”

Max looked at his father.

That small movement told me everything.

He wasn’t fearless.

He was protected.

And Richard had taught him that protection meant never facing consequences.
