Chapter 1 - The Child in the Wet Sheet

“Dad… my back hurts.”

Sawyer stopped beneath the porch light with eight-year-old Gracie trembling in his arms.

Her damp hair clung to her pale face. A white sheet covered her light sleepwear, but it could not hide the swelling along one leg or the dark marks near her lower back.

Behind them, Carolina rushed through the open black door in her dark green evening dress.

“Put her down. She fell.”

Sawyer looked at his wife.

He had returned from a five-day business trip less than ten minutes earlier. He had expected to find Gracie asleep.

Instead, he had heard a weak cry from the locked laundry room.

“What happened to her?”

Carolina extended both hands.

“You’re overreacting. Give her to me.”

Sawyer pivoted sharply, turning Gracie away from her.

Carolina grabbed his upper arm.

Without loosening his hold on his daughter, Sawyer drove his forearm between Carolina’s wrist and his body, breaking her grip.

“Accidents aren’t hidden.”

Bonnie, Carolina’s mother, stood frozen on the wet patio with a flashlight hanging from one hand.

Carolina’s expression shifted.

Only for a second.

But Sawyer saw panic.

He pulled out his phone and began recording.

Then a light switched on beyond the hedge.

A shadowed neighbor stepped behind the gate and raised a smartphone.

Bonnie stared toward him.

“That camera saw everything.”

Carolina’s phone nearly slipped from her fingers.

Sawyer tightened his grip around his car keys.

The neighbor gave one slow nod.

And Carolina whispered, “He doesn’t know what he recorded.”

👉 But the terror in Carolina’s eyes told Sawyer she knew exactly what the camera had seen.
