Chapter 16 - The Video Behind the Hedge

Sawyer met Daniel, Mara, and Bonnie in a quiet conference room.
Gracie remained safely with a pediatric nurse and Bonnie’s sister.
Before Sawyer left, she held his hand.
“Will you be mad when you see it?”
“At you? Never.”
“Mom said I made her do it.”
“No one makes an adult hurt a child.”
Gracie looked into his eyes.
“Don’t watch by yourself.”
So Bonnie sat beside him.
Daniel placed the original file on the screen.
The video began at 10:06 p.m.
Carolina carried out the crystal bowl.
She moved the safety mat.
She filled the bowl with rainwater.
Then she called Gracie outside.
There was no sound from the camera, but the actions were clear.
Gracie hesitated.
Carolina pointed toward the bowl.
The child tried to lift it.
Her arms shook.
Carolina ordered her to continue.
Halfway across the patio, Gracie slipped.
The bowl shattered.
She fell hard onto her side.
She tried to stand but collapsed again.
Carolina did not rush to help.
She looked first toward the street.
Then toward the neighboring house.
Only after confirming no one appeared did she grab Gracie’s wrist.
Sawyer looked away.
Bonnie began sobbing.
On-screen, Carolina dragged the injured child several feet toward the door.
Gracie’s wet sleepwear caught against the rough stone.
Carolina pulled harder.
Then she paused beneath the porch camera and positioned Gracie as though helping her walk.
It was a performance for her own recording.
