Chapter 11 - Bonnie’s Recorded Call
Bonnie placed her phone on the table.
“I recorded all of it.”
Carolina’s voice played through the speaker.
“Mom, you need to go back before Sawyer gets access.”
“Access to what?”
“The porch footage.”
“You said the camera didn’t work.”
“I don’t know whether it worked.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
Carolina grew impatient.
“Because people misunderstand discipline.”
Bonnie’s recorded voice remained calm.
“Did you hurt Gracie?”
“She dropped the bowl.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
A long silence followed.
Then Carolina said, “I barely touched her.”
Sawyer’s hands curled into fists.
The call continued.
Carolina admitted pulling Gracie across the wet patio after she refused to stand.
She claimed she only wanted to move her inside.
Then she admitted locking the laundry room because Gracie’s crying might alert Bonnie or the neighbors.
“I needed time to think,” Carolina said.
“You needed time to create a story,” Bonnie answered.
Carolina’s final words were the worst.
“If Sawyer sees the video, tell him Gracie provoked me. Say she attacked first.”
The recording ended.
Bonnie looked at Sawyer.
“She wanted me to lie.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That I would never protect her at Gracie’s expense.”
Bonnie wiped her tears.
“I spent thirty years excusing Carolina because her father left and she was angry. I kept telling myself she would become softer when she had a child.”
Sawyer looked through the glass at Gracie.
“She became crueler because Gracie couldn’t fight back.”
The hospital social worker entered and asked to speak privately with Sawyer.
She had interviewed Gracie.
