Chapter 4 - The Punishment Carolina Denied

Bonnie followed Sawyer’s gaze toward the broken crystal.
“That bowl was in the locked dining cabinet.”
Carolina shook her head.
“Gracie took it without permission.”
Gracie immediately began crying.
“No, I didn’t.”
Sawyer crouched beside the car door.
“You’re safe. Tell me slowly.”
Carolina cut in.
“She was punished for lying. That’s all.”
Sawyer rose.
“What punishment?”
Carolina realized her mistake.
Her mouth opened, but no words came.
Bonnie stepped closer.
“You said she fell.”
“She did.”
“Before or after you punished her?”
Carolina’s eyes darted toward the hedge.
The neighbor still stood behind the gate, holding his phone.
He had not moved.
Sawyer noticed her looking.
“What are you afraid he saw?”
“Nothing.”
The answer came too quickly.
Gracie touched Sawyer’s sleeve.
“Mom made me carry the bowl outside because I spilled juice.”
“That bowl weighs almost twenty pounds,” Bonnie said.
“She needed to learn responsibility,” Carolina snapped.
“She is eight,” Sawyer replied.
Carolina’s voice rose.
“She has been impossible since you left. She talks back. She lies. She embarrasses me.”
Sawyer’s expression became frighteningly calm.
“So you made her carry something she could barely lift across a wet patio?”
Carolina pointed toward Gracie.
“She dropped it on purpose.”
Gracie shook her head violently.
“My foot slipped.”
Bonnie stared at the injuries on her granddaughter’s leg.
Then she saw a second mark near Gracie’s wrist.
It was shaped like fingers.
May you like
Not like a fall.
👉 When Sawyer asked who had grabbed her, Gracie looked at Carolina—and then begged her father not to make her answer.
