Chapter 7 - The Missing Forty Minutes

The neighbor said the incident occurred at 10:14 p.m.
Carolina had told Sawyer that Gracie fell just before he arrived at 10:53.
Nearly forty minutes were missing.
Sawyer opened the car door.
“Gracie, were you hurt at ten fourteen?”
She nodded weakly.
“What happened afterward?”
Carolina stepped closer.
“Do not put words in her mouth.”
Bonnie raised the flashlight between them.
“Stay back.”
Gracie’s voice was barely audible.
“Mom took me to the laundry room.”
“Why?”
“She said I had to stop making noise.”
Sawyer looked at the damp sheet.
“Were you wet before she put you there?”
Gracie nodded.
“The bowl broke, and the punch went everywhere.”
Bonnie frowned.
“There was no punch in that bowl.”
Carolina froze.
Sawyer noticed.
“What was inside it?”
Gracie swallowed.
“Water from the patio bucket.”
Bonnie looked toward the far corner of the porch.
A cleaning bucket sat beneath the gutter, filled with cold rainwater.
Carolina had made Gracie carry the heavy bowl after filling it from the bucket.
When the child slipped, the crystal shattered.
Then Carolina locked her inside the laundry room in wet clothes.
Sawyer clenched his jaw.
“For forty minutes?”
Gracie gripped his hand.
“She said I couldn’t come out until I stopped crying.”
Bonnie covered her mouth.
Carolina shouted, “She needed to calm down!”
Sawyer turned slowly.
“She was injured, soaked, and locked in a room.”
“I checked on her.”
“How many times?”
Carolina did not answer.
Bonnie’s flashlight trembled.
Then Gracie added one sentence that made everyone fall silent.
May you like
“Grandma knocked on the door, but Mom told her I was asleep.”
👉 Bonnie had been inside the house the entire time—and Carolina had carefully kept her from seeing what was happening.
