Chapter 18 - The Woman at the Hospital Door
Carolina wore Bonnie’s pale coat and covered her blonde hair with a gray scarf.
She gave Bonnie’s name at the hospital desk.
But the nurse recognized her from the security notice.
Carolina reached Gracie’s hallway before Sawyer stepped from the consultation room.
He stopped in front of her.
“Leave.”
Her injured-innocence expression appeared instantly.
“I came to see my daughter.”
“You came in disguise.”
“Because everyone is treating me like a criminal.”
“You forged my signature and planned to send her away.”
Carolina’s face changed.
“You went through my private things.”
“You fabricated medical records about our child.”
“She needs help.”
“She needs protection from you.”
Carolina moved closer.
“You don’t know what she is like when you’re gone.”
“I know what you are like.”
She glanced past him toward Gracie’s room.
Sawyer shifted his body, blocking her view.
“Let me talk to her.”
“No.”
“I need to explain.”
“She does not need your explanation.”
Carolina lowered her voice.
“If you keep her from me, she will think I abandoned her.”
Sawyer felt no anger now.
Only clarity.
“You abandoned her the moment you cared more about hiding the injury than helping her.”
Bonnie arrived behind them.
Carolina turned hopefully.
“Mom.”
Bonnie stood beside Sawyer.
“You used my name to get inside.”
“I knew you would understand.”
“I understand that I spent years protecting the wrong person.”
Carolina’s face collapsed.
Hospital security approached.
As she was escorted away, she pointed toward Sawyer.
“You will regret turning Gracie against me.”
Sawyer did not answer.
From inside the room, Gracie had heard the raised voices.
