Chapter 14 - The School She Never Chose
A hospital nurse brought Gracie’s belongings from Bonnie’s car.
Among them was her tablet.
Sawyer charged it and found several unread emails in a hidden folder.
Carolina had contacted a residential behavioral school in another state.
She described Gracie as aggressive, dishonest, and emotionally unstable.
She requested immediate placement.
Sawyer’s signature appeared on the application.
But he had never signed it.
Mara examined the document.
“It’s copied from another form.”
The school planned to send transportation the following Monday.
Carolina had intended for Gracie to be gone before Sawyer’s next trip ended.
Bonnie read the emails twice.
“She was going to tell us Gracie needed treatment.”
Sawyer’s face hardened.
“She was going to erase her.”
Gracie watched from the bed.
“What school?”
Sawyer immediately closed the tablet.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
“Mom said I might go somewhere for bad kids.”
“You are not bad.”
“She said you agreed.”
“I never agreed.”
Gracie’s relief came so quickly it broke him.
She began crying into his shirt.
“I thought you didn’t want me.”
Sawyer held her carefully.
“There is nowhere in this world I would send you because someone else lied about you.”
Later, Mara discovered Carolina had also opened a private bank account.
Large transfers had been made from Gracie’s education fund.
The money had paid deposits to the residential school and to a public-relations consultant.
