Chapter 8 - Bonnie’s False Memory

Bonnie looked at her daughter as though seeing a stranger.

“You told me Gracie went to bed early.”

“She was supposed to.”

“You said the noise came from the dishwasher.”

Carolina looked away.

Bonnie began reconstructing the night aloud.

At 9:45, Carolina had sent her to the guest room to search for a missing shawl.

At 10:10, Bonnie heard glass break.

Carolina claimed she dropped a serving tray.

At 10:20, Bonnie heard crying.

Carolina said Gracie was upset because Sawyer had missed another phone call.

At 10:30, Bonnie knocked on the laundry room door after hearing movement.

Carolina told her the room was empty.

“You kept moving me away from her,” Bonnie whispered.

Carolina’s voice hardened.

“Because you interfere with my parenting.”

“You lied to me.”

“I managed the situation.”

Sawyer stared at her.

“Managed?”

Carolina’s face flushed.

“You have no idea what it is like when she challenges every instruction.”

Gracie began shaking.

Sawyer closed the door again so she could not hear.

“What instruction did she challenge?”

Carolina folded her arms.

“She refused to apologize.”

“For dropping something she was physically unable to carry?”

“For disobeying me.”

Bonnie’s eyes filled with tears.

“She has always tried to please you.”

“That is what she wants everyone to believe.”

Sawyer’s phone vibrated.

The emergency department confirmed they were ready for Gracie.

He turned toward the car.

Carolina reached for the handle.

Sawyer stopped her with one rigid palm.

“You are not coming with us.”

“She is my daughter.”

“Then tell me the truth before I drive away.”

Carolina’s jaw trembled.

“She fell.”

The lie sounded weaker now.

👉 But the hospital would soon discover that one of Gracie’s injuries could not have come from falling onto the patio.
