Chapter 1 - The Ring in the Rain

“Amber! You signed everything!”

Kenton’s voice exploded across the courthouse steps.

Amber kept walking.

Rain darkened the shoulders of her cream maternity dress as she crossed the wet pavement, one hand beneath her triplet belly and the other gripping her leather handbag.

Behind her, Kenton shoved through the glass doors so violently that an attorney stumbled out of his way.

He waved the signed divorce papers above his head.

“You signed the house away. The accounts. The company shares. Everything.”

Amber stopped.

Not because he ordered her to.

Because he grabbed the handle of her handbag and jerked it backward.

Her body twisted dangerously beneath the weight of her pregnancy.

Several courthouse visitors gasped.

Amber planted both heels, ripped the bag free with one hard pull, and turned.

“Take your hand off what belongs to me.”

Kenton froze.

He had expected tears.

He had expected the same exhausted woman who had sat across from him in court while his attorney described her as unstable, dependent, and financially useless.

Instead, Amber stood in the rain with her shoulders square and her eyes cold.

Kenton pointed toward her belly.

“Who married you?”

Amber lifted her left hand.

A large diamond ring flashed beneath the gray Ohio sky.

Kenton’s face changed.

His anger broke into disbelief.

Then fear.

Amber lowered his pointing hand with two firm fingers.

“The man financing your empire.”

Kenton’s phone began vibrating violently.

One call.

Then another.

Then another.

Behind him, Tessa—the attorney Kenton had once called his most loyal legal weapon—stepped through the courthouse doors holding a thick licensing folder.

She raised it where he could see.

Kenton spun toward her.

“What did you do?”

Tessa did not answer.

A black luxury sedan stopped at the curb.

Two security men stepped out.

Kenton lunged toward Amber again, but one guard planted a firm palm against his chest and stopped him instantly.

“You’re destroying everything!” Kenton shouted.

Amber moved beside the open rear door.

A tall man in a charcoal overcoat began stepping from the shadows inside the sedan.

Kenton saw only part of his face.

It was enough.

All color disappeared from him.

Amber looked over her shoulder.

“What you buried is going to destroy you.”

The man behind her placed one protective hand near her back.

Kenton whispered one name.

May you like

“Isaac.”

👉 The man Kenton feared most had not only married Amber—he had arrived carrying the one contract that could collapse Kenton’s entire business empire.
