Chapter 6 - The Settlement Trap

Kenton became generous after Amber stopped fighting.
He offered her a small condo.
Temporary medical insurance.
A modest monthly payment.
In return, he wanted the company, the marital home, and every business interest.
“You never cared about the business,” he told her.
Amber sat across from him at the dining table.
“I cared about our marriage.”
“That isn’t an asset.”
“No. Apparently not.”
He mistook her exhaustion for surrender.
Marissa began appearing more openly.
She attended company events.
Used Amber’s home office.
Once, Amber found her drinking from the coffee mug the triplets’ ultrasound photo had been printed on.
Marissa smiled.
“Kenton said you were moving out soon.”
Amber took the mug from her hand.
“Did he also say my name is on your training certificates?”
Marissa’s smile flickered.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Good.”
Amber walked away.
“Keep believing that.”
Kenton later cornered her in the bedroom.
“What did you say to Marissa?”
“The truth makes people nervous.”
“You are jealous.”
Amber looked down at her belly.
“I’m carrying three children while divorcing a man who forged my signature.”
Kenton froze.
Then laughed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know my name.”
“You signed dozens of business documents.”
“Show me the originals.”
His expression hardened.
“You are trying to create leverage.”
“I don’t need leverage.”
Kenton stepped closer.
“What do you have?”
Amber met his eyes.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
That terrified him more than accusation.
The next morning, he replaced the locks on the office.
He changed company passwords.
He ordered staff not to speak with Amber.
Each action was documented.
Isaac’s investigators preserved the access logs.
Tessa quietly copied licensing correspondence.
Amber continued signing settlement drafts.
But every version included one sentence Kenton never read carefully:
All professional licenses, certifications, and associated rights held in Amber Hartwell’s legal name remain her sole separate property.
Kenton’s attorney assumed it was standard language.
Kenton assumed Amber’s old license was worthless.
He signed.
Two weeks before the courthouse hearing, Isaac invited Amber to dinner.
Not at a restaurant.
At a quiet house beside Lake Erie.
He cooked badly.
She laughed for the first time in months.
Later, Isaac stood beside the window and said, “I don’t want to become another man controlling your choices.”
Amber looked at him.
“Then don’t.”
“I’m trying not to.”
Their relationship did not begin with passion.
It began with safety.
Doctors’ appointments.
Legal meetings.
Silence that did not demand anything.

And one night, when Amber woke from a nightmare, Isaac sat outside her bedroom door until she invited him in.
👉 While Kenton celebrated the settlement, Isaac discovered a hidden licensing account connected to Amber’s unborn children.
