Chapter 11 - The Server Room

The company’s operations manager called Tessa.
“There’s smoke in the server room.”
Kenton immediately looked away.
Isaac noticed.
“Who did you send?”
“No one.”
The operations manager continued over the phone.
“The fire suppression system activated. Someone tried to remove the recording drives.”
Amber’s hand tightened around her handbag.
“Were the files destroyed?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Kenton’s breathing slowed.
Too much.
He was relieved.
Isaac looked at one of his security men.
“Go.”
The man left with the investigators.
Kenton laughed.
“You have nothing without those recordings.”
Tessa looked at him.
“That is a strange thing to say if you didn’t know what was stored there.”
His smile disappeared.
Amber’s belly tightened painfully.
She inhaled.
Isaac turned toward her immediately.
“Contraction?”
“No.”
“Amber.”
She looked at her watch.
The pain came again.
Not regular.
Not yet.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re carrying triplets in the rain.”
“I need five more minutes.”
Kenton heard.
His expression shifted.
“You should go to a hospital.”
Amber stared at him.
It was the first reasonable thing he had said.
Then he added, “We can discuss this privately after.”
She almost laughed.
“No.”
“Amber, think about the babies.”
“I have thought about them every second.”
“You are risking them for revenge.”
Her face hardened.
“You put debt in their names before they could breathe.”
The courthouse crowd fell silent.
Kenton looked around.
He realized everyone had heard.
“You are lying.”
Amber reached into her bag.
She removed copies of the trust documents.
His signature appeared on the final page.
Kenton stared at it.
“That document was preliminary.”
“You signed it.”
“It was never funded.”
“The transfers were scheduled for tomorrow.”
Kenton turned toward Tessa.
“You stole confidential files.”
“I preserved evidence of fraud.”
A message arrived on Isaac’s phone.
He read it.
Then looked at Kenton.
“The server drives survived.”
Kenton’s face collapsed.
The fire suppression system had protected the hardware.
The man sent to destroy it had been detained leaving the building.
He was a private contractor Kenton had paid in cash.
But Kenton still believed the recordings could not be used.
“They’re privileged.”
Tessa shook her head.
“Business fraud discussions are not protected attorney-client communications.”
Isaac looked toward Amber.
“The recordings will confirm who gave the orders.”
Kenton suddenly moved toward her.
Not fast enough to strike.
Fast enough to frighten.
The guard blocked him again.
Kenton shouted over the man’s shoulder.
“You built that company with me!”
Amber remained still.
“Yes.”
“Then why destroy it?”
“I’m not destroying it.”
She placed one hand over her belly.
May you like
“I’m taking my name back.”
👉 Amber did not intend to shut the company down—she intended to remove Kenton and save every employee he had put at risk.
