Chapter 17 - The Custody Hearing From the Hospital
The petition claimed Amber was medically unstable.
It claimed Isaac manipulated her.
It claimed the triplets’ inheritance and business interests required Kenton’s protection.
The wording exposed him.
Even after their birth, he described the babies through money.
Amber attended the emergency hearing by video from her hospital room.
The triplets remained in the NICU.
Isaac sat out of camera view unless Amber needed him.
Kenton appeared with a new attorney.
His suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
The judge reviewed the petition.
“Mr. Hartwell, you are requesting temporary custody of three premature infants?”
“Yes.”
“Where do you intend to care for them?”
“My home.”
The marital home had been frozen as part of the financial investigation.
Kenton’s attorney whispered to him.
Kenton corrected himself.
“A suitable residence will be arranged.”
The judge looked at Amber.
“Mrs. Vale, what is your position?”
Amber spoke calmly.
“Kenton knew the babies were biologically his. He stole my blood for testing. He created trusts in their names. He placed corporate liabilities inside those trusts. Then he threatened to falsify the paternity result if I refused to sign a business document.”
The judge looked toward Kenton.
“Is any part of that inaccurate?”
Kenton’s attorney objected.
Tessa submitted the recorded confession.
Marissa’s statement.
The trust documents.
The private laboratory billing records.
The courthouse footage showing Kenton grabbing Amber’s handbag.
The judge watched in silence.
Then Tessa submitted the final evidence.
The licensing server recording.
Kenton’s voice filled the hearing.
Use Amber’s name until the sale closes. After that, the liability belongs to her and the children.
Kenton lowered his head.
The judge denied his petition.
Temporary sole custody remained with Amber.
Kenton received no unsupervised access.
Any future visitation required psychological evaluation, financial disclosure, and a separate hearing.
He tried to speak directly to Amber.
“Please.”
The judge warned him.
Kenton ignored her.
“Amber, I was scared.”
Amber looked at the screen.
“No.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You made plans.”
“I love those children.”
“You loved what they could do for you.”
His face crumpled.
For the first time, Amber saw something like regret.
But regret did not erase danger.
“I want to see them.”
“Then become someone safe enough to be seen.”
The screen went silent.
The hearing ended.
Amber turned toward the NICU window.
Three incubators stood beneath soft blue lights.
Isaac came to her side.
“You won.”
Amber shook her head.
“They are still fighting to breathe.”
Justice was not victory yet.
