Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Money

Isaac Vale stepped fully into the rain.

He was taller than Kenton remembered.

Calmer too.

That frightened Kenton more than anger would have.

For six years, Kenton’s real estate licensing company had expanded across Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania using private loans from Vale Capital.

Isaac had never attended Kenton’s events.

Never appeared in photographs.

Never demanded public credit.

He simply funded the acquisitions and allowed Kenton to present himself as a self-made businessman.

Kenton had believed Isaac was a silent investor.

Now Isaac stood beside Amber like a husband protecting his wife.

“You married him?” Kenton demanded.

Amber’s expression did not change.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before today.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It is the only one you deserve.”

Kenton looked at Isaac.

“You knew she was my wife.”

“Ex-wife,” Isaac said.

“The ink is barely dry.”

“The marriage ended long before the paperwork.”

Kenton stepped toward them.

The guard blocked him again.

Tessa descended the courthouse steps slowly.

The thick folder remained beneath her arm.

Kenton pointed at it.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“You work for me.”

“I resigned this morning.”

His face twisted.

“You represented me in that courtroom.”

“I represented your divorce position.”

She looked at Amber.

“I did not agree to protect what I discovered afterward.”

Kenton’s phone rang again.

This time the name of his chief financial officer appeared.

He rejected the call.

It immediately returned.

Isaac looked toward the screen.

“You should answer.”

Kenton glared at him.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing yet.”

The word yet struck harder than a threat.

Amber moved toward the sedan.

Kenton shouted after her.

“You signed the settlement. You walked away with almost nothing.”

Amber paused.

“That was the point.”

Kenton’s confidence flickered.

“You think signing away your rights makes you powerful?”

“No.”

Amber turned.

“It makes you comfortable.”

He frowned.

She continued.

“You believed you won.”

Tessa opened the licensing folder just enough for him to see several state seals and audit notices.

Kenton’s smile vanished.

“What is that?”

Tessa closed it again.

“Proof that the company you built may never have legally existed.”

Kenton laughed too quickly.

“Those licenses are valid.”

Tessa looked at Isaac.

Then at Amber.

“Some are.”

May you like

Kenton stopped breathing.

👉 Amber had surrendered everything in the divorce because she knew the assets Kenton fought to keep were tied to licenses obtained through a secret he had buried years earlier.
