Chapter 13 - The Test Kenton Never Showed Her

Amber’s doctor had offered prenatal paternity testing after Kenton questioned the pregnancy.

Amber refused.

The babies were conceived during the marriage.

She had never been unfaithful.

She believed no test was necessary.

Kenton had continued implying the triplets might not be his.

Now, in the parking garage, he had called them his children.

Amber stepped closer.

“You tested them.”

Kenton looked away.

“How?”

He remained silent.

Isaac’s guard checked the distance between them.

Amber did not need protection from an answer.

She needed the truth.

“You accessed my medical records.”

Kenton’s jaw flexed.

“I was your husband.”

“That did not give you consent.”

“I needed certainty.”

“You had certainty.”

“I had a wife who became distant.”

“You were sleeping with Marissa.”

“That has nothing to do with paternity.”

Amber stared at him.

“You took my blood.”

Kenton said nothing.

Then she remembered.

Three months earlier, she had gone to the hospital for dizziness.

A nurse took several vials.

Later, the hospital called to say one sample had been misplaced.

Kenton had been beside her that day.

He had carried the lab paperwork.

Amber’s stomach turned.

“You stole a sample.”

“I arranged a private test.”

Isaac’s eyes hardened.

“Without her consent.”

Kenton looked at him.

“This is between us.”

“There is no us,” Amber said.

Kenton’s expression cracked.

“The test confirmed the babies are mine.”

Rainwater dripped from the edge of the garage entrance.

No one spoke.

Amber felt three lives moving beneath her heart.

Children Kenton had known were his.

Children he had called burdens.

Children he had planned to place beneath fraudulent debt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.

“I wanted leverage.”

The honesty was monstrous.

“If you fought the divorce, I would question paternity publicly.”

Amber’s eyes filled.

Not with weakness.

With grief for the man she once loved.

“You were willing to shame your own children to control me.”

Kenton’s face tightened.

“I never intended to hurt them.”

“You intended to use them.”

Isaac stepped beside Amber.

Kenton’s jealousy exploded.

“You think he loves them? He wants your license. Your company. Your settlement.”

Amber looked toward Isaac.

He did not defend himself immediately.

Instead, he removed a document from his coat.

A legal waiver.

Isaac had renounced any financial claim to Amber’s company interests before their marriage.

Amber had not known.

He handed it to her.

“Kenton should see what a man signs when he does not intend to own his wife.”

Kenton stared at the waiver.

Then at Amber.

The contrast destroyed the last of his control.

👉 Kenton’s stolen paternity test could prove another crime—but the private laboratory had already erased the file.
