Chapter 1 - Something Inside Her

Dr. Lawson stopped moving the ultrasound probe.

The room went so quiet that Emily Thorne could hear the faint electrical hum from the monitor.

Her fifteen-year-old daughter, Maya, lay trembling beneath a thin hospital sheet, her face gray with exhaustion. For three weeks, she had complained of stabbing pain beneath her ribs. For three weeks, her father had called her dramatic, lazy, and desperate for attention.

Now the experienced doctor stared at the screen as if it had shown him something impossible.

“Mrs. Thorne,” he said carefully, “there is something inside her.”

Emily grabbed Maya’s hand.

The girl’s fingers were ice cold.

Before Emily could ask another question, the ultrasound-room door swung open.

Robert walked in wearing his expensive charcoal suit, his phone still pressed to his ear. He ended the call with an irritated sigh.

“I told you she’s pretending,” he said. “This is just another waste of money.”

Emily turned so sharply that the chair legs scraped the floor.

“You ignored her pain for weeks.”

Robert rolled his eyes.

“She has exams coming up. Teenagers invent symptoms.”

Dr. Lawson slowly enlarged the image.

His expression hardened.

“But this is not what we expected to find.”

Maya squeezed her mother’s hand until her knuckles turned white.

“Mom,” she whispered, “am I going to die?”

Emily leaned over her immediately.

“No. I’m right here.”

Dr. Lawson opened Maya’s medical file, then looked directly at Robert.

“Mr. Thorne, has your daughter ever undergone abdominal surgery?”

Robert answered too quickly.

“No.”

Maya stared at him.

Emily noticed the tiny movement in Robert’s jaw.

Dr. Lawson glanced back at the monitor.

“The object appears artificial,” he said. “And judging by the inflammation around it, it may have been inside her for months.”

Robert’s phone slipped slightly in his hand.

Then Maya whispered something that made Emily’s blood run cold.

“Dad knows what it is.”

👉 Maya had never accused her father of anything before—but the terror in Robert’s eyes told Emily her daughter was finally ready to speak.
