Chapter 9 - The Woman in the Photograph

Emily studied the photograph until her eyes burned.

The woman had her height, her coat, and her dark hair.

But something was wrong.

Emily always wore her wedding ring on her left hand.

The woman in the image wore none.

Detective Ortiz sent the photograph to a forensic lab.

Initial analysis found no obvious digital manipulation.

That meant someone had physically dressed like Emily.

Maya remained under hospital protection while social workers interviewed her.

During one interview, she described a woman at the clinic who spoke in her mother’s voice.

“She told me everything would be okay,” Maya said. “But she never came close enough for me to see her face.”

Emily remembered Robert hiring a voice actor for a company presentation the previous year.

The actor’s name was Lauren Vale.

She searched old company photographs.

Lauren had Emily’s approximate build.

And in one picture, she wore red-framed glasses beside Dr. Celia Voss.

Ortiz located Lauren’s apartment.

It was empty.

Neighbors said she had left suddenly after seeing Robert’s arrest on television.

A trash search uncovered receipts for a dark wig, an identical coat, and cosmetic prosthetics.

The disguise had been planned months in advance.

But Lauren was gone.

Without her testimony, Robert’s attorneys continued blaming Emily.

Then Maya asked to speak privately with her mother.

A nurse allowed Emily into the room for ten supervised minutes.

Maya reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a crumpled paper.

“I remembered this from the clinic.”

It was a rough drawing of a symbol: a circle crossed by three vertical lines.

Emily recognized it immediately.

Robert kept the same symbol engraved on a locked safe in their basement.

“He told me that safe contained tax records,” she said.

That night, police opened it.

Inside were stacks of cash, fake consent forms, and twelve passports.

One passport belonged to Lauren Vale.

Another bore Emily’s photograph—but a different name.

Evelyn Cross.

Ortiz stared at the document.

“Who is Evelyn Cross?”

Emily felt a forgotten memory surface.

“That was my mother’s maiden name.”

At the bottom of the safe lay a letter addressed to Robert.

It began:

Your wife still doesn’t know who her mother really worked for.

👉 The conspiracy had begun long before Maya’s operation, and the next name in Robert’s safe belonged to Emily’s own mother.
